Preteens (10-12)

Preteens (10-12)

When children enter their pre-teen years between 9 and 12, they’ll be living with a mix of permanent and primary teeth. As primary teeth continue to fall out and adult teeth erupt into place, it will be essential to ensure they come into the proper alignment and spacing. During this period, Dr. Leena may suggest that your child receive orthodontic treatments such as braces or spacers. Diligent oral hygiene is essential during this period to help your child’s teeth remain healthy as their adult teeth continue to come in.

Two-Phase Orthodontics And Your Child

This time in a child’s life is the perfect time to address problems with the development of their teeth and jaws. Since they’re still growing, there is an excellent opportunity to make adjustments to solve problems such as narrow jaws and improperly spaced teeth. If Dr. Leena suggests two-phase orthodontics, the first stage will begin by addressing the identified problem. This often involves an upper jaw that is growing too quickly, or too slowly, for normal placement and spacing of teeth. This period will involve x-rays, photographs, and other imaging of your child’s jaw and teeth to determine the proper placement of orthodontic equipment. A successful first-phase treatment ensures that all of your child’s teeth will have room to grow safely. Phase two will begin once all of your child’s teeth have grown in, and typically involves the use of braces on the upper and/or lower teeth. Once the second phase has completed, often taking as long as 24 months.

Extractions and Composite Fillings

During this stage of your child’s development,Dr. Leena will do everything they can to prevent extracting your children’s teeth unnecessarily. The most common cause for extraction during these years is removing primary teeth that have not fallen out naturally and are causing problems with impaction. While decay can result in the need to extract a tooth, more often, we’ll take steps to preserve the child’s tooth. There are two methods used to save a tooth impacted by decay. Composite fillings are the first method and are used when decay has not advanced far enough to cause an infection in the pulp. Composite materials match those of your child’s natural teeth and thus are able to be used in any part of the mouth without causing aesthetic concerns. In the event that the pulp becomes infected, a root canal may be called for to save the tooth. Dental restoration options can provide a workable solution if a tooth needs to be extracted; it’s far better to save the natural teeth whenever possible.
